HOW TO PLAY MARBLES:
1. Setup:
- Draw a ring: Create a circle on a flat surface using chalk, string, or even by digging a shallow ring in the dirt. (typically about 3-feet across)
- Place the marbles: Each player contributes an equal number of regular/smaller size marbles to the center of the ring, spreading them out evenly. (10-15 marbles is a typical amount, but this can be adjusted)
- Choose a "shooter": Each player selects a larger marble than the others, as this will be used for shooting.
- Decide on "keepsies" or "friendlies": Determine whether players will keep the marbles they knock out of the ring (keepsies) or if all marbles are returned to their original owners at the end of the game (friendlies).
2. Determine the Order of Play:
- Lagging: Draw a line about 10 feet away from the ring. Each player takes turns shooting their shooter marble towards the line. The player whose marble lands closest to the line goes first.
- Alternative: You can also use a coin flip or play Rock, Paper, Scissors.
3. Gameplay:
- Shooting: Kneel outside the ring and use your shooter marble to hit and knock the marbles out of the ring. The most common shooting technique is to cradle the shooter marble in the crook of your index finger against your thumb and then flick your thumb to propel it. Remember to keep at least one part of your hand touching the ground when shooting.
- Successful Shot: If you knock a marble out of the ring with your shooter, you get to keep that one. You also get to take another shot from the spot where your shooter landed.
- Unsuccessful Shot: If you don't knock any marbles out of the ring and your shooter stays inside the ring, your turn ends, and you leave your shooter where it is for your next turn. If your shooter goes outside the ring, you can pick it up and shoot from anywhere outside the ring on your next turn.
- Knocking out a shooter: If a player's shooter remains inside the ring, another player can try to knock it out. If successful, they may win all the marbles the opponent has collected so far.
4. Winning the Game:
- Ending the game: The game ends when all the marbles have been knocked out of the ring.
- Determining the winner: The player with the most marbles collected at the end of the game is the winner.
