This word is hard, who is able to hear it?

Posted by Raymond Voegele on

The thought came to me that, “The love of Christ is brutal.”
I pondered that for awhile, and was looking at scripture because I remembered something R.C Sproul once taught me, about what it really means for God to “draw” us.
In the process, this caught my interest....

“This word is hard, who is able to hear it?”

Not, “I’m unable.” Not, help me hear.”
Not a question of why THEY are unable to hear, but a questioning of those that can.
His taught ones questioned whether the word could even be heard and the hearing of those able to hear it, because they could not hear it...even as the taught, followers of Christ.
...so they stopped following.

They heard, but couldn’t hear.
As if to eat, but not be able to digest...so rather than ask for help to digest the food, they deemed it as indigestible and left the table.

In contrast, there was a different response by another man...
23And יהושע said to him, “If you are able to believe, all is possible to him who believes.”
24And immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “I believe Master, help my unbelief!”

...although this word is hard for me to hear, help me to hear, because I believe.
